The Facade as Canvas

The facade of a home is the largest continuous surface you have to work with. While rooflines define the silhouette, the facade fills in the picture. Think of the facade as a canvas: the roofline is the frame, and everything between the roofline and the ground is the painting. Your job is to illuminate the canvas in a way that reveals the architecture, creates depth, and draws the eye to the places that matter most — starting with the front door.

Most holiday lighting installations treat the facade as an afterthought. Roofline goes up, some bushes get wrapped, and the facade sits in darkness between them. This is a missed opportunity. The facade is where architectural detail lives — stone columns, brick texture, siding patterns, shutters, trim work. Lighting these elements transforms a house from "decorated" to "designed."


Reading the Architecture

Before you select a single fixture or strand, stand at the street and study the facade. Every home tells you how it wants to be lit if you know how to read it.

Symmetrical Facades

Colonial, Georgian, and Federal-style homes are typically symmetrical — a centered front door flanked by evenly spaced windows. These facades want balanced lighting. What you do on the left side, you mirror on the right. Unbalanced lighting on a symmetrical facade looks like a mistake.

Asymmetrical Facades

Modern, Craftsman, and Ranch-style homes often have asymmetrical facades — the front door offset to one side, windows of different sizes, a garage dominating one end. These facades give you permission to light asymmetrically, but you still need visual balance. The heavier side (the side with more architectural mass) gets more light to anchor it, while the lighter side gets enough to participate without overwhelming.

Layered Facades

Homes with bump-outs, porticos, recessed entries, and varying setbacks create natural layers. These layers are your greatest asset. Light the foreground layer brighter than the background layer, and the facade gains depth that a flat facade cannot achieve. A recessed entry, for example, becomes a lit cave that draws the eye inward.

Textured vs Smooth Surfaces

Brick, stone, stucco, and wood siding each respond differently to light. Textured surfaces (brick, stone, rough stucco) come alive with directional lighting that casts micro-shadows across the texture. Smooth surfaces (vinyl siding, smooth stucco, painted wood) reflect light evenly and require careful intensity control to avoid hot spots.


The Entryway: Brightest Point in the Design

The front door is the destination. Every element in your design should support the visual journey from the street to the door. The entryway should be the brightest point on the facade — not overwhelmingly bright, but noticeably brighter than the surrounding surfaces.

The Entry Hierarchy

  1. Front door: Brightest point. Lit directly or framed with light.
  2. Entry surround: The columns, trim, or portico framing the door. Lit at 70-80% of door brightness.
  3. Path to the door: Lit to guide movement. 50-60% of door brightness.
  4. Flanking facade: Lit enough to provide context. 30-40% of door brightness.

This hierarchy creates a natural visual path from the street to the door. When everything is the same brightness, the eye has no guide and the display feels flat.

Entry Lighting Techniques

Downlighting from overhead. If the entry has a portico, overhang, or covered porch, mount a downlight directly above the door. This washes the door and the threshold with warm light and creates the most natural-looking entry lighting.

Flanking with uplights or sconces. Placing uplights or lit garland on either side of the door creates a frame. This works on entries with columns, pilasters, or wide trim that can serve as the vertical frame elements. Keep the flanking lights symmetric even on asymmetric homes — the entry itself should feel balanced.

Wreath with integrated lighting. A lit wreath centered on the door provides both decoration and illumination. It is the simplest entry accent and one of the most effective, especially on homes where the entry surround is minimal.

Garland and swag. For entries with a horizontal element above the door (a transom, a portico beam, a porch header), garland with integrated lights creates a soft overhead glow. Drape the garland naturally — overly tight or overly loose garland looks forced.


Facade Lighting Techniques for Holiday Displays

Flood Lighting the Facade

Broad-beam flood lights placed 6-10 feet from the base of the house, angled upward at 45-65 degrees, wash the entire facade in a colored or warm-white glow. This is the fastest way to add drama to a facade and works on houses with clean, uninterrupted surfaces.

Best for: Large smooth surfaces, homes where architectural detail is minimal, clients who want bold color statements (red floods on a white house, for example).

Avoid when: The facade has significant texture or detail that would be washed out by a broad flood. Also avoid when windows are large — flooding a facade with color makes the windows glow colored from inside, which some clients find intrusive.

Grazing the Facade

Grazing places the light source close to the wall surface (12-24 inches away) and aims it nearly parallel to the wall. This creates dramatic shadows across textured surfaces — brick joints, stone faces, stucco relief. Grazing reveals the architecture instead of flattening it.

Best for: Brick homes, stone facades, textured stucco, any surface with depth worth showing. Grazing a brick facade with warm white light is one of the most impressive effects in holiday lighting.

Avoid when: The surface is smooth and featureless — grazing a flat vinyl siding wall just shows the seams and imperfections.

Accent Lighting Specific Features

Rather than lighting the entire facade, accent lighting targets specific architectural features — a stone chimney, a decorative gable, a bay window, a column. This approach works best on homes with strong individual features that deserve attention.

Best for: Homes with standout features (stone chimneys, decorative brickwork, dormers), high-end installations where restraint is valued, facades where full coverage would be overwhelming.


Columns: The Vertical Anchors

Columns — whether structural or decorative — are the vertical anchors of a facade. They divide the facade into sections, frame the entry, and provide natural attachment points for garland, wraps, and uplighting.

Wrapping Columns with Light

Wrapping columns with mini lights or LED light strands is a common holiday technique. The key is consistent wrap spacing and clean termination at top and bottom.

  • Spacing: 3-4 inches between wraps for a dense look, 6 inches for a lighter look. Consistency matters more than density.
  • Direction: Wrap bottom to top, maintaining consistent spiral direction. Do not reverse direction mid-column.
  • Termination: At the top, tuck the wire behind the column cap or into the porch ceiling. At the bottom, tuck it behind the column base. Visible wire tails at the top or bottom ruin the clean column line.

Uplighting Columns

For a more architectural look, place a small uplight at the base of each column, aimed upward. This washes the column in light and reveals its shape and material. On round columns, the light wraps around the cylindrical form and creates a graduated brightness that is more sophisticated than a strand wrap.


Integrating Facade Lighting with the Roofline

The facade does not exist in isolation. It sits below the roofline, above the ground plane, and is flanked by landscaping. Integration means the facade lighting complements — does not compete with — these other elements.

Brightness Relationships

If the roofline is your brightest element (as it often is for classic holiday displays), the facade should be softer. If the facade is the star (as in architectural lighting or facade flooding), the roofline should step back to a supporting role.

The key principle: no more than two elements at maximum brightness. If the roofline AND the facade AND the trees are all at full intensity, the display has no hierarchy and no resting point for the eye. Something must be brightest, something must be softest, and everything else falls in between.

Color Coordination

Facade lighting should share the same color palette as the roofline. If the roofline is warm white, the facade floods should be warm white (or a single color that complements warm white, like red or green). Mixing cool white facade floods with warm white roofline creates a jarring temperature clash.


Common Facade Mistakes

Mistake 1: Ignoring the Facade Entirely

The roofline is lit, the bushes are lit, and the facade is a dark void between them. This creates a disconnect between the top and bottom of the display. Even a single pair of flood lights aimed at the facade from ground level adds enormous value.

Mistake 2: Overlighting the Facade

Flooding the facade with so much light that it becomes a glowing wall. The architecture disappears, windows become black holes by comparison, and the display looks aggressive rather than welcoming. Facade lighting should reveal, not overwhelm.

Mistake 3: Inconsistent Trim Treatment

Lighting some windows with garland and leaving others bare. Wrapping one column and not its pair. On a symmetric home, this reads as incomplete. On any home, it reads as careless.

Mistake 4: Glare from Flood Lights

Flood lights aimed too high or at too steep an angle create glare for anyone approaching the house. Aim flood lights so the beam terminates on the facade surface, not into the viewer's eyes. Test by walking the approach path to the front door.
