The Light Selection Framework

Roofline light selection is not about preference. It is about matching the bulb to the house, the viewing distance, and the overall design intent. The wrong bulb on a roofline does not just look mediocre — it undermines the entire display. A mini light strand on a sprawling estate reads as cheap. Oversized C9 bulbs on a small cottage look cartoonish.

The variables are straightforward: bulb size, bulb shape, spacing, color, and light technology (LED vs incandescent). Each variable has a correct answer for any given installation, and this article gives you the decision framework.


Bulb Size: The Most Important Decision

C9 Bulbs (1-1/8 inch diameter)

C9 is the professional standard for roofline lighting. The bulb is large enough to register as an individual point of light from 150+ feet away, and it has enough visual mass to hold its own against a two-story facade.

Use C9 when:

  • The home has a street setback of 50 feet or more
  • The eave height is 15 feet or higher
  • The roofline is the primary design element
  • The client wants a "classic" holiday look
  • The total eave run exceeds 80 linear feet

Spacing: 12-inch on-center is the standard for C9 roofline stringer. Some installers use 8-inch spacing for higher density, but this increases cost by 50% and often makes the roofline look overly busy from normal viewing distance. At 15-inch spacing, gaps between bulbs become visible and the line loses its solidity. Stick with 12-inch unless you have a specific design reason to deviate.

C7 Bulbs (7/8 inch diameter)

C7 is the mid-range option. It works well on smaller homes, shorter setbacks, and secondary rooflines where C9 would be too dominant.

Use C7 when:

  • The home is a cottage, bungalow, or small ranch
  • The street setback is under 50 feet
  • The eave height is under 12 feet
  • The roofline is a secondary element (trees or facade are the stars)
  • You need a secondary roofline to read at a lower hierarchy than the C9 main line

Spacing: 8-inch or 12-inch on-center. At 8-inch spacing, C7 creates a dense, warm line that works beautifully on small homes. At 12-inch spacing, C7 is adequate for secondary rooflines but can look sparse on long runs.

Mini Lights (T5 or M5, 5mm)

Mini lights on rooflines are rarely the right choice for professional installations. They work on very specific homes — small structures with short setbacks where the viewer is close enough to appreciate the delicate look.

Use mini lights when:

  • The home is a small structure (cottage, gatehouse, detached garage under 600 sq ft)
  • The setback is under 30 feet
  • The design intent is "twinkling" rather than "bold outline"
  • Budget is the primary constraint and the client understands the trade-off

Spacing: 4-inch or 6-inch on-center (as manufactured). Mini light spacing is set by the stringer — you do not typically custom-space mini lights.

LED Modules and Pixel Strips

LED module systems (individual LED units on a stringer) and pixel strips represent the technology-forward end of roofline lighting. They allow color-changing effects, animation, and programmable displays.

Use LED modules/pixels when:

  • The client wants color-changing or animated effects
  • The installation is permanent or semi-permanent (year-round architectural lighting)
  • The home has clean, modern architecture that suits a contemporary look
  • The budget supports the higher per-foot cost

Spacing: Varies by product — typically 2-inch to 6-inch pixel pitch. Tighter pitch means smoother animation but higher cost.


Bulb Shape: Beyond the Standard

Smooth (Traditional)

The standard smooth C9 or C7 bulb is a tapered shape with a uniform surface. It produces an even glow and reads cleanly from distance. This is the default choice for most professional rooflines.

Faceted

Faceted bulbs have a diamond-cut surface that creates sparkle and light refraction. They appear brighter than smooth bulbs of the same wattage because the facets scatter light in multiple directions. Faceted C9 is the most popular professional roofline bulb because it maximizes visual impact per watt.

Strawberry / Textured

Strawberry-shaped bulbs have a dimpled surface that softens the light output. They create a slightly warmer, more diffused look. Less common for rooflines but effective on secondary structures or when the client prefers a softer aesthetic.


Color Selection for Rooflines

Warm White (2700K)

The standard for most professional holiday displays. Warm white reads as "classic holiday" and complements virtually every house color and architectural style. It coordinates well with warm interior lighting visible through windows.

Pure / Neutral White (4000K)

Brighter and cleaner than warm white, neutral white works on contemporary homes, white or gray-painted homes, and commercial properties. It can feel slightly clinical on traditional architecture.

Cool White (5000K-6500K)

Cool white has a blue undertone that reads as icy or modern. Use it deliberately when the design calls for it — not as a default. Cool white on a brown or red brick home creates an unflattering contrast.

Single Color (Red, Green, Blue)

Single-color rooflines are a bold choice that works when the entire display is designed around that color. A red-only roofline can look striking on a white home. Green on green (lights on a green roof) disappears.

Multi-Color

Multi-color C9 stringer — alternating red, green, blue, yellow, orange — is the classic "holiday" look. It works on homes where the client wants a festive, playful feel. It does not work on high-end properties where the design intent is elegant or sophisticated.

Color Matching to House

This is the detail that separates a professional from a clip-and-plug operator. Match your roofline color to the house:

  • Red or brown brick: Warm white or pure white. Avoid cool white.
  • White or cream siding: Any white tone works. Warm white is safest.
  • Gray or blue siding: Pure white or cool white. Warm white can look yellowed.
  • Dark (charcoal, black, dark green): Warm white creates contrast. Cool white can disappear against a dark night sky.
  • Stone or natural materials: Warm white complements the organic tones.

LED vs Incandescent: The Professional Reality

The incandescent vs LED debate is settled for professional installers. LED wins on every operational metric: energy consumption, heat output, lifespan, durability, and replacement cost. A single LED C9 bulb draws 0.5-1 watt compared to 7 watts for incandescent. That is a 7:1 ratio that changes your circuit planning entirely.

The one area where incandescent still has partisans is color warmth. The original warm glow of a tungsten incandescent C9 is a specific color that some clients prefer. Modern warm-white LED bulbs have closed this gap significantly — the best warm-white LEDs are nearly indistinguishable from incandescent at roofline viewing distances. But if a client insists on the incandescent look, newer LED filament-style bulbs satisfy that demand without the operational penalties.

For your truck stock: Carry LED exclusively for roofline installations. Carry incandescent only if a specific client has requested it and you have priced the additional power and replacement costs into the job.


Stringer Wire Color

This detail gets overlooked and should not. The stringer wire connecting your bulbs is visible in daylight and from close range. Match it to the mounting surface:

  • Green wire for homes with dark rooflines, dark gutters, or evergreen trim
  • White wire for homes with white fascia, white gutters, or light-colored eaves
  • Black wire for modern homes with black or dark gray trim

The wrong wire color against a contrasting background makes the installation visible in daylight, which some clients dislike. Ask during the site survey and stock both green and white wire at minimum.
